Kitchen Island Seating: A Quick Guide
Counter Height vs. Bar Height
Standard kitchen counters are 36 inches tall, requiring 24 to 26 inch stools. Bar-height islands at 42 inches need 28 to 30 inch stools. Measure your island before shopping.
Spacing Per Person
Allow at least 24 inches of linear counter space per seat. This gives each person enough elbow room to eat comfortably without bumping into neighbors.
Overhang Requirements
- 12 inches minimum overhang for knee clearance
- 15 inches is more comfortable for taller users
- 18 inches for a true dining experience with plate space
Support for Extended Overhangs
Any overhang beyond 12 inches needs structural support. Corbels, steel brackets, or a waterfall countertop edge all work. Unsupported overhangs risk cracking under weight.
Stool Style Guide
Backless stools tuck away cleanly when not in use. Stools with backs and swivel bases are better for long meals and conversation. Upholstered seats add softness but require more maintenance near food prep areas.
