Bedroom Lighting Layers for Better Sleep

Bedroom Lighting Layers for Better Sleep

By Thomas Adler ·

Why Layered Lighting Matters

A single overhead light creates harsh shadows and fails to support the variety of activities that happen in a bedroom. Layered lighting addresses reading, dressing, relaxing, and sleeping with appropriate light levels.

The Three Layers

Ambient Lighting

General illumination from a ceiling fixture, recessed lights, or a flush mount. Use dimmable fixtures so you can adjust brightness from full power to a soft glow. Warm white bulbs (2700K) are essential for bedrooms.

Task Lighting

Focused light for reading and getting dressed. Bedside lamps, wall-mounted sconces, or adjustable reading arms provide directed light without disturbing a partner. Position reading lights at shoulder height when sitting up in bed.

Accent Lighting

Decorative lighting that adds atmosphere. LED strips behind the headboard, a statement pendant, or picture lights above artwork create visual interest and a hotel-like ambiance.
